Sister Alice Marie Bezdek, a native of West and a member of the Sisters of Divine Providence, died May 4 after a lengthy illness. She was 87. The funeral Mass was May 7 in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center. Rev. Balthasar Janacek presided and preached the eulogy, Sister Redempta Bradley assisted. Scripture passages were read by her niece, Janet Sulak, and Sister Marian Frances Margo and Sister Mary Andrew Wolf. Symbols of Sister Alice Marie's religious life were placed on the coffin while Sister Margaret Ellen Gallatin read their meaning. Sister Henrietta Schroeder and Sister Marian Frances Margo placed the white pall, a reminder of Baptism, Sister Angelina Murphy, the Bible, Sister Inez Teran, the crucifix, Sister Bernadine Gaidusek, the rosary, and Sister Dorothy Theresa Zimmerer, a copy of the Constitution of the Sisters of Divine Providence. Sister Henrietta Schroeder led the prayers of the petition and Lillian Urbanovsky and Carolyn Gouldman, Sister Alice Marie's sister and niece respectively, presented the Offertory gifts. Assisting as Communion ministers were nieces, Sister Rosemary Lichnovsky and Jennifer Clement, and Sister Patricia Ann Sullivan. Sister Elaine Gentemann, organist, accompanied the congregational singing. At the Wake service the evening before the funeral, a number of Sisters shared stories about Sister Alice Marie's exceptional teaching and her concern for her students; about her spirit and generosity as a member of the Sister's community; and about her strong faith in God. Her niece, Sister Rosemary Lichnovsky, related how much the family looked forward to Sister Alice Marie's visits and her long, newsy letters. Sister Alice Marie (nee Frances Bezdek) was the daughter of John and Frances Kallus Bezdek. She joined the Congregation in 1925. Five years later, 1930, she made her profession of vows and then began a teaching ministry that was to last 55 years. She taught in Enid and Vinita, Oklahoma; St. Mary's and St. Martin Hall, San Antonio; El Campo, Houston, Fayetteville, and Ennis. She retired in 1985. Sister Alice Marie is survived by her sisters and their spouses, Bessie and Harry Lichnovsky, Lillian and Danny Urbanovsky, and Josephine and Eddie Kubala, all of West; two brothers and their spouses, John and Barbara Bezdek, Fort Worth, and Harry and Sis Bezdek of Abbott; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial was in Providence Cemetery. Zizik-Kearns and Riebe-Saunders Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
