Mose Penton was born in Seminole, Alabama; he relocated with his parents to Beulah at the age of one. Before entering law enforcement, Penton worked as a grocer and as chief of the special service department for the Pensacola Shipbuilding Company. In June 1923 he was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Pensacola. In October of the same year, Florida Governor Cary A. Hardee appointed Penton as Escambia County Sheriff. Penton was elected Sheriff in his own right in 1924, and was re-elected in 1928. Mose Penton served as Sheriff for nine years, serving time as Pensacola Chief of Police. He was the youngest man ever to assume both offices.
