Bio
Joan E. Spiehs, 88, of Grand Island, formerly of Cairo, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Tiffany Square Care Center. Joan was born April 5, 1923, at Grand Island to Chris and Mary (Joehnck) Bruhn. Survivors are: sisters, Mary Dickson and Gayle Schweiger both of Grand Island; sisters-in-law, Maxine Roberts of Cairo, Alice Spiehs of Grand Island and Jessie Bruhn of Lexington; and one brother-in-law, Alvin Meyer of Grand Island; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan grew up in western Hall County and attended District #42 school. Joan married Harold L. Spiehs on Dec. 15, 1948. Joan worked in the dry cleaning business until 1965, she then helped Harold on the farm. Following Harold's death, she moved to Grand Island in 1988. Joan was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Platt-Deutsche Ladies Society. Joan enjoyed playing cards at the Cairo Senior Center and the Platt-Deutsche. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1988; brothers, Dale, Homer, Wayne and Kenneth Bruhn; and sisters, Laura Claussen, Edna Maier and Hazel Day. Burial was in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on August 8, 2011
