The Waco News-Tribune, Number 248, Page 1, August 16, 1956 - "Veteran Prof At Baylor Dies Friday - Miss Kate Griffith of 1025 South Fourth Street, who had spent 58 of the 79 years of her life teaching at Baylor University, died at 3:20 p.m. Friday in a hospital. -- Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wilkirson and Hatch Chapel with Dr. Harold E. Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery at Whitney. -- Surviving are a sister, Mrs. W. E. Mason of Denver, Colo.; a niece, Mrs. Joe Frazier of Waco and a nephew, E. L. Griffith of Waco. -- Miss Griffith graduated from Baylor in 1898, with a bachelor of arts degree. She taught French, German, and Spanish, had been head of the German department for some years, at the time of her death and for many years previously was head of Baylor's correspondence school. -- Many Baylor faculty members, including Dr. W. T. Gooch, executive vice president, had been her students. -- Miss Griffith spent many summers and several leaves of absence continuing her education, some of them abroad. She studied French and German at the University of Chicago in 1900-1902, took a degree of bachelor of philosophy there; studied at the University of Berlin, 1902-3, took her master's degree at Baylor in 1920, went back to Europe in 1920-21 to study at the Sorbonne and L'Alliance Francaise. She studied at the Institute of Touraine at Tours in 1921-1922, and at the University of Dijon in 1922. -- Miss Griffith was born in Spersville, La., in 1876. -- She had an apartment in the home of Miss Alta Jack, Baylor French teacher, who retired several years ago, and when Miss Jack went to a rest home Miss Griffith continued to maintain her residence there. -- She was a member of Frist Baptist Church, and attended Sunday school regularly until her last illness developed six weeks ago."
