Whitney Messenger Thursday March 21, 1935 Mrs. J. M. Shelley Died March 14th Miss Ino Burns was born in Orange, Georgia, October 1, 1855 an departed this life from her home at Whitney March 14th aged 79 years. she united in Marriage with J. M. Shelley, September 21, 1873 and for twenty years they resided in Arkansas and in Oklahoma for three years before coming to Texas where they since made their home. As their residence has been in or around Whitney these many years, they have formed a wide circle of acquaintenances and warm friends, and large gathering at the funeral services held Friday afternoon, March 15, from their home, bore testimony of the depth of love in their hearts for a friend of such sterling character. Around fifty years ago she accepted Christ as her Savior, uniting with the Betel Missionary Baptist Church at Gravett, Arkansas and at the time of her home going held membership with the Baptist Church at Huron. She was afflicted for several years, but bore her suffering with patience unsurpassed, never complaining, but with unwavering faith and trust in Him she "fought a good fight," kept her faith and left an example worthy of emuiation by all who knew her. Funeral services in chare of Undertaker Scruggs, were held at the home at 2 p.m. Friday and Rev. F. E. Weller and Rev. W. D. Kirkpatrick brought words of comfort and hope to the bereaved. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her departure, the following children: Mrs. Ada Sooter, Slanton, Tex.; Mrs. Sallie Cheerie, Texarkana, Arkansas; Mrs. Mae Devine, Tarlton, Okla.; Joseph L. and Thomas V. Shelley, Whitney; Mrs. Jessie Dyer, of Waco; and Mrs. Firtie Rogers, San Diego, Calif.. Fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren also survive. All the loving hearts and willing hands could do was freely given to make the hours of illness easier and brighter, and now with broken hearts, they wait with humble admission to the will of God for that hour of glad reunion that is the hope of those who trust in God. Interment was in DeGraffenried Cemetery (later DeGraffenried was moved into Whitney). Among those from out of town for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Dave Sooter, Slant; Mrs. Sallie Cherry, Mrs. G. H. Stinson, Cherry Ann Stinson, Texarkana, Arkansas; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Barker, Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Dyer, Ross and Jack of Waco; Mrs. John Holley, Mr. and Mrs. Standrige, Cleburne; Mrs. Lucille Grant of Brandon; Miss Catheyn Shelley, Burleson; Mr. and Mrs. Fuch, Mrs. Noland, Mrs. Pruitt, Mrs. Clements and Miss Violet Pruitt of Waco. Card of Thanks We take this means of thanking the many friends and neighbors for the many kindness shown us and our loved one in her illness and in her going away. Especially do we wish to thank the ministers, Rev. F. W. Weller and Rev. W. D. Kirpatrick, for visiting our loved one in her illness and for words of comfort spoken her passing. May God comfort and bless each of you and when sorrow comes your way, may you be surrounded with such friends to help you, is our prayer. J. M. Shelley, Children and Grandchildren She was also moved to Whitney when the Lake Whitney Dam was put in.
