Bio

Henry William Shupp, resident of De Leon for almost a quarter of a century, died at his farm home in the south-eastern out-skirts of De Leon on Wednesday of last week, April 15th. Although Mr. Shupp had been in ill health for some time, he had remained up and about, and his passing came unexpectedly late Wednesday evening as the result of a sudden heart attack. Born in Baden, Germany, Mr. Shupp had reached the age of sixty-five years. He came to the United States in 1891 landing at Galveston, Texas. In 1900 he was married to Miss Carrie Gilchrest, their wedding date being April 14th. To this sturdy immigrant and his faithful companion were born eleven children, two of which died in infancy, and a son, George, passed away April 9th, 1939. Mr. Shupp was a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are him are his wife and eight children, three sons, Walter, Elmo and Lawrence Shupp all of De Leon; five daughters, Mrs. Earnest Graham of Campbell, Mrs. Leonard Wilson and Mrs. Harvey Lewis of De Leon, Mrs. Clarence Coan and Mrs. R. M. Robertson both of Waco, Texas. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, one great grand child, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Diehl and Mrs. Elizabeth Gildea of Easton, Pa. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon of last week at 5 o'clock at the Downing Baptist Church, Rev. J. L. Isbell officiating. Interment followed in the Downing cemetery, with Higginbotham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Lenord Wilson, Clarence Coan, R. M. Robertson, Harvey Lewis, Murdell Shupp and Jack Miller.
