Downing Man Is Killed by Falling Electric Light Pole George Shupp, who formerly lived in the Downing community was killed while working on a rural electrification project in Hunt County Sunday. The body was sent here and burial took place at the Downing Cemetery. The Star-Telegram of Monday carried the following account of the accident: GREENVILLE, April 9 - George Shupp, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shupp of De Leon, was killed instantly when a light pole which fellow workmen were putting into place fell and fractured his skull. He died almost instantly. The accident happened near Merit, in the northwest part of Hunt County, where a rural electrification line is being constructed by Reynolds and Sutton, contractors. Schupp had been here about two years. The body was sent to De Leon. George Washington Shupp was born in Haskell county February 22, 1909 and died April 9, 1939 at Greenville, Texas by an accident from a falling pole while working on a electrical high line. Mr. Shupp moved to Comanche county 1916 where he has resided ever since until the last few weeks during which time he has lived at Greenville while working there. He is survived by his father and mother, three brothers, Walter, Elmo and Lawrence of De Leon, five sisters, Mrs. Susie Graham, Greenville, Mrs. L. W. Wilson, Mrs. H. F. Lewis, De Leon, Mrs. C. W. Coan, Waco, Mrs Ina Pearl Robertson of Axtell. All of whom were present. George was never a member of any church but he had made the statement several time during his spell of sickness a year ago that he was ready to go and had no fear.
