Daughter of Jennie Manton Barnes & 1st husband Joseph Hardesty. Ft. Bend Records show Bertha Hardesty married August Hartlage on January 4, 1910. Her death certificate states that she was divorced at time of death in 1935. The following obituary appeared in the Rosenberg Herald on April 19, 1935: "Bertha Hartlage" The entire community was deeply shocked and grieved Thursday morning when the death of Mrs. Bertha Hartlage was announced. Mrs. Hartlage had not been feeling well for the past several weeks, but little did her friends and relatives realize that her condition was serious until several days before her death, even then, death was not expected. She went peacefully into her eternal sleep during the early hours of Thursday morning, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ira M. Douglass, where she had gone on Monday, in order to be under the care of Mrs. Douglass, who is a nurse. Mrs. Hartlage, nee Bertha Blanche Hardesty, was born January 20, 1890, in Sheldon, Illinois. At the age of fifteen years, she came to Rosenberg with her parents. She attended the Rosenberg schools and has been a constant resident of Rosenberg, where her friends are numbered by her acquaintances. She was a faithful member of the Methodist Church, South. Mrs.Hartlage was very prominent in lodge circles. She was Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge and one of the charter members. She was also Past Oracle of the Royal Neighbors of America and at the time of her death was the Camp's Recorder. She has always been a good business woman, however she found time in work with her church and lodges and was always ready to do her part when called upon. She has been faithful and her good deeds will be lasting. It was a pleasure to know her and to be associated with her in anyway--she will be greatly missed. Deceased is survived by her heart-broken mother, Mrs. J. M. Barnes of Danbury and two brothers, M. K. Barnes and C. V. Barnes, also of Danbury. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church South, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Ed Barcus of Orange, her former pastor and close friend, came over to officiate. He was assisted by Rev. C. M. Myers, pastor of the Methodist Church, South, here. A large concourse of relatives and friends were present to pay their final tribute to this worthy woman. The floral offering was large and attested to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The following friends acted as pallbearers: Ira M. Douglass, Sterling Oliver, Walter Meyer, J. A. Yarling, Harry Bernshaausen and Raymond Knipling. Interment took place in the W.O.W. Cemetery. The members of R. N. A. Camp No 7826 had charge of the Services at the grave. The Foerster Funeral Home of Rosenberg had charge of funeral arrangements. Sympathy, deep and sincere, is extended the bereaved mother and brothers. * * *
