Irwin, a telegrapher for railroad and bank accountant, joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1932. Ordained in 1940, some of his assignments were at St Louis; Denver, Kansas City, Missouri; Mankato, Minnesota; and Oshkosh. Tragically, his great work as a priest was ended in 1955, at age 54, when he died as a result of exposure in a snow storm when his car stalled near Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Rev. Irvin Umhoefer, 53, collapsed and died at the door of the Jesuit Novitiate in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. His body was accompanied home to Mankato, Minnesota by Brother Maxmillian Antczaka. Father Umhoefer had been pastor of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato for five years. Father Umhoefer had been at the Jesuit Novitiate in Wisconsin (Oshkosh) since August 1954. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, he became a Jesuit in 1931.He was a treasurer of the Jesuit Novitiate and a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus. He finished grade school and high school at St. Joseph's in Anthon, Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from St. Louis University in1937. He studied at St. Mary's Theological Seminary of the Society of Jesus in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. He was the son of Joseph and Minnie Umhoefer, and he was survived by a sister, Miss Mayme Umhoefer of Anthon, Iowa; three brothers, Clarence of Anton, Roy of Cherokee, and Joseph of Washington, D.C. Note: His obituary says he was buried in Mankato, but I believe he might be in this cemetery. If anyone knows differently, please let me know and I'll correct the error.
