C. E. Lewis, Geo. W. Frederick and Mrs. M. J. Payne. *********************************************** From William Cutler's History of Kansas: GEORGE W. FREDERICK was born of Virginia and Kentucky parentage, in the State of Indiana, March 22, 1833; moved from that State to Kansas in the fall of 1857; came through with his family (wife and two children) with a team, consequently saw some of the Pro-slavery excitement in the State of Missouri. He settled near Emporia, on his arrival, on a claim of 160 acres, and in the spring of 1858 bought another eighty-three and one-half miles southeast of the town and improved it. The same spring he was elected Treasurer of (then) Madison County, but never qualified. In 1859 he engaged in the general mercantile trade in Emporia, and in 1861 removed back to his farm and engaged in farming and in the cattle business until 1865, when he moved back to the town and went into the mercantile business again, and with it, to some extent, the real estate and general agency business, and in 1874 he was elected Clerk of the District Court, which position he retained for six years. At the organization of the town into a city government he was a member for two years of the City Council, after which he was elected city Treasurer, which position he held for three terms. In 1861 he was enrolled in the State Militia and was elected Lieutenant in a company of the town; was called out in the Price raid, several Indian raids, and other excitements during the late war, and in 1881 he went to Colorado in the interest and to superintend the working of the coal and silver mines of the La Veta Coal and Mining Company, of which he is a member, being there seven months on that occasion, and during the same summer, in connection with Senator Harlin, of Iowa, and others, organized the Whale Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company, with their principal office and property at La Veta, Col. Late in the same fall he again went into the mercantile business, and in the summer of 1882 assisted in organizing and put his mercantile interest into the Emporia Mercantile Company, and was elected president and general manager, which position he now holds In connection with his favorite and continued general agency business. *********************************************** Emporia Gazette, Tuesday, October 20, 1903; p.4, c.2 G. W. Frederick Dead. G.W. Frederick died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tom Sedgwick, at Parsons, Kansas, this morning shortly after midnight. Sunday Mr. Fredericks (sic) was removed from Emporia to the home of his daughter. It was then known that he could not live long. He died from complicated troubles. He was 69 years old. Mr. Frederick was one of the oldest settlers in this county. He came from Morgan county, Indiana in 1857 and the records in Lyon county register of deeds office show that he settled on his claim December 15, 1857. The claim was one of 160 acres in section 34, township 19, range 12. However Mr. Frederick did not farm. He was engaged in the grocery business several years here with W.O. Furgeson and later was for two terms clerk of the district court. Afterwards he was admitted to the Lyon county bar and was at the time of death a veteran member. In later years Mr. Frederick has been engaged in the land and real estate business at one time with J.T. Burton. In 1886 Mr. Frederick went to California where he was until two years ago when he returned to Emporia and opened a real estate office. He has a great many friends here and throughout Lyon county. The services will be conducted by J.H. Hill. The casket will remain open from 2 o'clock until time for the services, in order to give the friends who desire it, an opportunity to view the remains. The burial will take place at Maplewood cemetery. Mr. Frederick was a member of A.O.U.W. lodge No. 2. *********************************************** Emporia, Gazette, Thursday, October 22, 1903; p. 3, c.2 Funeral of G.W. Frederick. The funeral of G.W. Frederick was held yesterday afternoon. Rev. Joseph H. Hill, of the Normal, conducted the services and the interment was made in Maplewood where Mr. Frederick's wife and one son are buried. In honor of Mr. Frederick the district court was adjourned yesterday afternoon from 4 till 5 o'clock to permit the attorneys to attend the funeral. The funeral service was much later than was intended because the north-bound Katy train which brought the body here from Parsons was three hours late. Mr. Frederick was one of the oldest members of the Lyon county bar and was clerk of the district court three consecutive terms, from 1875 to 1881. The pall bearers were: M.W. Kirkendall, L.B. Lellogg [Kellogg], H.H, White, C.B. Bacheller, Lafayette Jones. and W.O. Furgeson. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sedgwick and their children, Edith, Fred and Mary Sedgwick and Mr. J.H. Hibben came from Parsons to attend the funeral. Mrs. Sedgwick is Mr. Frederick's only daughter.
