Bio

James Powell Garrett was born April 11, 1869, in Alabama, one of six children born to Thomas Jefferson Garrett (1836-1905) and his first wife. His father remarried in 1878 and had seven more children. James' siblings included: Francis Marion, John T., Wiley E., Henry M., and Mary E. His half siblings included: Martha Lenora, William Jefferson, Annie Bell, Alma Paralee, Effie Callie, Claude Elbert, and Susan Elizabeth. In 1880, James at age 10 was living on a farm in Lee County, Mississippi with his father and stepmother Nellie Caroline Turner Garrett, and his siblings: Marion, age 16; John T., age 14; Wiley, age 12; Henry, age 8; Mary E., age 5; and half sibling Martha, age 8 months. Powell married Mary Lulu Mobley on February 28, 1895 in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. By 1900, they were farming in Lexinton, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Lulu's seven year old daughter, Flora B. Doty, by her previous marriage was living with them. In 1910, Powell was living in Lexington, Cleveland County, Oklahoma on a farm he owned free and clear, next to his brother John. Powell's household included his wife Lulu, age 39, born in Mississippi, who had been married previously; his son Preston, age 7, born in Oklahoma; his son Teddy, age 5, born in Oklahoma; and his stepdaughter Flora Doty, age 17, born in Oklahoma. In 1920, Powell and Lulu were still living on the farm they owned in Lexington. Their two sons Preston and Teddy were still in the household. Both Lulu and Preston died in 1923. On August 20, 1927, in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, Powell married a widow, Mary Lula Jarboe Stewart. By 1930, Powell and Lula were living alone on their farm in Lexington. Powell's son Teddy had just married and was living with his wife Helen in Lexinton. Powell and Lula would have over 20 years together before he died in 1948.
