John Ruby McCashland was born May 4, 1841, in Mayne Co., Ind. In his infancy, his parents moved to Neoska Co., Ind., where they lived until he was eleven years old. The family then in 1852 moved to Livingston Co., Ill., where at the age of fifteen, he was converted and joined the Methodist church and remained a member of the church to the time of his death. At the age of twenty, he enlisted in Company A, 43rd Illinois Infantry and served continuously for four years as private, corporal, sergeant and at the close of the war was discharged as first sergeant of his Company. His discharge reads July 22nd, 1865. After the war he returned to his home neighborhood and resumed farming. August 23, 1866, he was united in marriage to Amanda Houchin in Livingston Co., Ill. October 16, 1870, Mr. and Mrs. McCashland landed in Fillmore Co., Nebr., where they have lived since that date. To this union were born seven children, three of whom are till living as follows: Mrs. C.W. Perkins of West Blue, Mrs. W.M. Walworth of Lincoln, and Edward McCashland of West Blue. At the age of seventy-six years, six months and eleven days, Mr. McCashland passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Perkins, two miles north of Fairmont about three o'clock p.m., Thursday, November 15, 1917. Mr. McCashland had been in failing health for several years and since the death of his wife, the decline of strength was more rapid and the last few weeks there was a marked weakening of mind as well as of the body. The funeral was held Saturday, November 17th, at 2:30 p.m., from the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.P. Yost. Interment was made in the Fairmont cemetery.
