Berkey Given Burial In Zion Churchyard After Services Here ----------------------------------------------- Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Zion Mennonite church, east of Hubbard, for John Berkey Jr., operator of a fleet of logging trucks at Stites, Idaho, and son of the John Berkeys of Hubbard. The Rev. Henry Penner of Calvary Mennonite church officiated, and the Peace in the Valley quartet sang. Interment was in the church cemetery beside his brother, Derben, who met death in a logging accident near Tillamook in 1944. John Berkey's body was found in Idaho's Clearwater river, some distance downstream from his pickup truck, Aug. 11. He is believed to have gone off the narrow canyon road Saturday, Aug. 8, after dozing at the wheel of his vehicle. He was within 20 miles of home on the way back from Lewiston, where he had gone for truck parts. The widow, Phoebe, and sons, Michael and Danny, and daughters, Kathy and Joan, were here from Stites for the funeral, returning Sunday to Idaho, where Michael (Cub) Berkey, 20, expects to conduct his father's business. John's older son, David, U.S. Navy, came from his Rhode Island station for the services. Pallbearers for the accident victim were Kenneth Kenagy, Edward Z. Yoder, Daniel B. Hostetler, Leslie Hostetler, Robert and Norman Stauffer, Joel Fisher and Lloyd Troyer.
