She was raised in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the Sweetwater Lutheran Church, Sweetwater, Nebraska Harley was a farmer and Julia was a homemaker and they lived on a farm in the Milburn vicinity for 26 years before their retirement to Sargent in 1943. ========================== Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs. Hughes Mrs. Julia Susanna Hughes, 72, a longtime Sargent resident, died unexpectedly Saturday morning at her home. Mrs Hughes had been in ill health for some time, but was able to be active most of the time. Funeral services to be held Tuesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church in Sargent with the Rev. Ivan Springer officiating. Mrs. Howard Pointer, organist, accompanied Mrs. William McNeil, and Mrs. Bert Amos who sang. Pallbearers were Fred Rush, Amos Knapp, Donald Dickman, Glenn Halouska, Herb Stevenson, and Harvey Howard. Interment was in the Arcadia Cemetery. Mrs. Hughes was born June 3, 1981 in Fullerton to Henry and Sina Nelson. When she was nine, she and her parents moved to Arcadia where she attended school and grew to womanhood. On June 6, 1911, she and Harley Hughes were married at Arcadia. They began their home in Arcadia and later moved to Milburn vicinity where they lived on a farm for 26 years. Following their retirement they moved to Sargent in 1943 and that has been their home since. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Rich of Rochester, Wash., and Mrs. Katherine Henion of Shelton; three sons, Alvin of Scotia, James of Broomfield, Colo., David of Lafayette, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Glen Hill and Mrs. Kenneth Hawley of Arcadia; two brothers Ed Nelson and Anton Nelson of Arcadia; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister. 1964
