Bio

Edward James Jakub was born on Feb. 18, 1922, to James and Mary (Vidlak) Jakub, at Edholm, Nebraska. He attended Butler County district 1 school. He was employed by Eacker Motor Company, Schuyler, in 1941. On Oct. 22, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at U.S. Army Base, Mariana Islands, South Pacific. October, 1945 he was discharged. Edward married Leola M. Jacobs on Nov. 17, 1945, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Clyde in rural Dodge County. They lived in West Point for nine months. Eddie was employed by Rief Motors, West Point as a mechanic. In 1947 they moved to Schuyler and he was a mechanic for C.J. Pickett. He also worked for Sloup TV and repair in North Bend. In the early 1950's he opened his own auto mechanic shop in his back yard in Schuyler. Due to his health he shut the doors in 1980. Eddie liked to go to antique car swap meets and restore antique cars. He was the past vice president of the Fremont Antique Car Club. Edward J. Jakub, 66, Schuyler, died from renal failure from the disease Scleroderma on Aug. 25, 1988, at Bryan Memorial Hospital, Lincoln. Father Andrew Meister, Anthony Tresnak, Ed Scdoris and Herman Kornbrust concelebrated the Aug. 29, 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rosary was recited Sunday evening at the church. Military graveside service at Schuyler Cemetery were by McLeod Post 47, American Legion and Hespen-Mitchell Post 4836, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Svoboda Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbears were Fred Hoppe, Leroy Gall, Tom Hajek, Bob Forney, Bob Sinkula and Paul Kroeger. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Bob Bernheisel, Clarence Pickett, Bob Kohler, Tom Heckman, Eddie Hancock and Elden Kasper. Surviors include his wife; Leola of Schuyler, five sons; Edward Eugene (Yvonne) Jakub, James (Elaine) Jakub, Jerome (Judy) Jakub, all of Columbus, Carrol (Linda) Jakub, of Octavia, Terry Jakub, of Schuyler, two daughters; Alice (Mrs. Joe) Kastanek, of Schuyler, Janell (Mrs. Russell) Brichacek, of Omaha, 12 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, three sisters; Elise Svoboda, of Linwood, Amelia Juranek, of Lincoln, Gladyce (Mrs. John) Faltys, of Schuyler. His parents and a brother, LaVerne Jakub, preceded him in death.
