Obituary Notice from The Grand Island Independent, May 12, 2009 Edean A. Gembala WOOD RIVER, Edean A. Gembala, 73, of Wood River died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, near Wood River. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a rosary at 7. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gembala was born March 24, 1936, at Ashton to Stanley and Pauline (Kosmicki) Pokorski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Gembala, on Jan. 20, 2008, and a son, Mark A. Gembala. Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and sons in law, Diane and Dave DeHerrera of Pueblo, Colo., and Patty and Dave Stewart of Wood River; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene Beasley of Waukegan, Ill., Elaine and Dale Nowak of St. Paul and Joan and Ron Cassity of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a brother and sister-in-law, Delphie and Mary Lou Pokorski of Prescott, Ariz..; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Pokorski of Ashton. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Julie and her husband, James Thompson, of Wood River, Lisa and her husband, Pat Bittner, of Grand Island, Jeffrey and his wife, Dream DeHerrera, of Pueblo, Colo. and Jarrett and wife K.C. DeHerrera of Denver, Jenifer and husband, Anthony Higgins of Denver and Jaramie DeHerrera of Denver; three great-grandsons, Christian, Camden and Carson Thompson. She grew up in the Ashton area graduating from Ashton High School in 1954. After graduation, she taught at a country school near Ashton. She was united in marriage to Alvin Gembala on Feb. 21, 1955, at Mount Carmel Church in Paplin. The couple resided in Wyoming and Colorado before moving to Wood River in 1974. She did cleaning for the Wood River Post Office and the Bank of Wood River. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River, the Ladies Aid of the Church and the Auxiliary Unit 108. She enjoyed her gardening, canning and cooking. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Pat and Lavern Pokorski. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Wood River Rescue Unit.
