Bio

LaVern "Vern" J. Pokorski, Sr. 78, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at St. Francis Medical Center. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 29 at Resurrection Catholic Church with Father Michael F. McDermott officiating. There will be a Rosary at 10:00 a.m. by the Knights of Columbus #11363, prior to the service. It was Vern's wishes to be cremated following death. Burial will be 1:00 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery near St. Paul with military rites by the St. Paul American Legion. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. "Vern" was born July 17, 1928 in rural Howard County, the son of Stanley and Pauline (Kosmicki) Pokorski. He attended Dist. #8 school in Howard County and helped his father on the farm. In 1945 he joined the US Navy, serving in WWII and until 1950. He married Rita Devork and they made their home in Omaha. "Vern" worked as a truck driver for various companies in the Omaha area. LaVern is survived by four sisters: Irene Beasley of Waukegan, IL, Edean (Mrs. Alvin) Gembala of Wood River, NE, Joan (Mrs. Ron) Cassity of Casa Grande, AZ, and Elaine (Mrs. Dale) Nowak of St. Paul, NE, and one brother: Del and Mary Lou Pokorski of Prescott, AZ. His brother, Patrick, preceded "Vern" in death. Also preceding him in death were two nephews, Kevin Nowak and Mark Gembala. Brother: Del R.
