Son of William and Elizabeth Hunke Niewohner. He attended Snyder Elementary and Snyder High School. Joe served with the First Calvary Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from January 12, 1951 until his honorable discharge on March 3, 1953. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, Army Occupational Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Joe returned to the family farm east of Snyder. On April 20, 1954, he married Margery Svitak. She preceded him in death September 2, 1969 in childbirth. On September 30, 1972, he married Myrna Wilberding at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Omaha. The couple continued to farm near Snyder.. Joe was a life long member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, where he served as a Parish Trustee, on the Religious Adult Education Committee, and as Usher. He was a member of the Snyder V.F.W. and had served as Quarter Master. He was past president of the Men's Holy Name Organization. Survivors include his wife, Myrna, of Scribner, a daughter Mary (Gary) Langhorst of Fremont, sons Gary (Lois) and Dennis of Scribner, Melvin (Sue) of Beemer and Anthony (Stacy) of Omaha, sisters Betty Cech of Howells, Rose Marie (Jim) McNamara and Rita (Vern)Ortmeier of Beemer, Jan (Lorin) Batenhorst of Wisner, Mary Ann Kluthe and Marcie (Mel) Ortmeier of Dodge, brothers Irwin (Gerri) of Onawa, Iowa, Leo (Yvonne) of Lyons, Daniel (Jeanette) of Scribner, Virgil (Karen) of Dodge, and Bernard (Betty Kay) of West Point, 15 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and brother in law Danny Kluthe.
