Bio
Bernie passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at UNMC in Omaha, NE. Bernard Niewohner was born on February 3, 1944 in Fremont, NE to William and Bertha (Hunke) Niewohner. Bernie attended St. Leo's Catholic School in Snyder and attended Snyder High School. He began farming at an early age and served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves for 6 years. On September 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to Betty Kay Ruskamp at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge, NE. The couple resided on the same farmstead for 53 years before retiring to Dodge five years ago. Bernie was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Dodge American Legion Post #122, and served on the Snyder Rural Fire Board for several years. Bernie took pride in farming and was a good steward of the land. He enjoyed the family time spent at Fremont Lakes, teaching the kids how to water ski. Survivors include- Wife-Betty Kay Niewohner of Dodge, NE Daughter-Michelle and Bob Nickloy of Olathe, KS and children-Ava and Nick Daughter-Gwen and Matt Schreiner of Spring Hill, KS and children-Eddie and fiancé Kate, Burk, and Hank Daughter-Rhonda and Colby Coash of Lincoln, NE and son-Cole Siblings- Rosemary McNamara of Beemer, NE Marcie and Mel Ortmeier of Dodge, NE Jan and Loren Batenhorst of Wisner, NE Dan and Jeanette Niewohner of Scribner, NE Rita and Vern Ortmeier of Elkhorn, NE In-laws- Karen Niewohner of Snyder, NE Dave and Reldine Ruskamp of Sargeant Bluff, IA Paul "Skip" Kaup of Las Vegas, NV Family friend-Sylvia Hevrdeys of Omaha, NE Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Bernie. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings-Joe (Myrna) Niewohner, Erwin (Jerry) Niewohner, Mary Ann (Daniel) Kluthe, Betty Cech, Leo (Yvonne) Niewohner, and Virgil Niewohner; In-laws-Jim McNamara, Dale Ruskamp, Janelle Kaup, and Marla Ruskamp.
