Bio

Irwin B. Niewohner, 83, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away July 31, 2013 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 5, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with Father Patrick O'Kane, Celebrant, officiating. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery with military honors by the United States Army. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa with a scriptural prayer service at 7:00 P.M. followed by the rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Irwin was born September 11, 1929, in Snyder, Nebraska, the son of William and Elizabeth (Hunke) Niewohner. He attended St. Leo's Catholic School and Snyder High School in Snyder. After farming with his father for a few years, he joined the United States Army in 1951. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War, where he worked in the Yokohama Engineering Department, until his honorable discharge in 1953. During his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He then returned home to Snyder to farm with his father. Irwin and Geraldine Reiman were united in marriage on May 18, 1955, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer, Nebraska. The couple farmed in the Onawa area beginning in February 1959. He also worked as a Custom Farm Seed dealer, for which he won many awards. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa where he served on the Church Council and Financial Committee. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Niewohner of Onawa, IA; five sons, Jim Niewohner of Onawa, IA, Tom (Theresa) Niewohner of Onawa, IA, David (Verlene) Niewohner of Shawnee, KS, Bob Niewohner of Ft. Collins, CO, and Ron (Melanie) of Mondamin, IA; three daughters, Pat (Dan) Battani of Ankeny, IA, Diane Niewohner of Lawton, IA, and Debra (Dave) Brinkman of Sioux Falls, SD; twelve grandchildren, Annie, Jessica, Rebecca, Stephanie, Brian, Eric, Taylor, Cody, Maria, Sarah, Amy, and Jeremy; five great-grandchildren and two on the way; six sisters, Betty Cech of Howells, NE, Rose Marie (Jim) McNamara and Rita (Vern) Ortmeier all of Beemer, NE, Jan (Lorin) Batenhorst of Wisner, NE, Mary Ann Kluthe and Marcie (Mel) Ortmeier all of Dodge, NE; and three brothers, Daniel (Jeanette) of Scribner, NE, Virgil (Karen) of Dodge, NE, and Bernard (Betty Kay) of West Point, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Leo; a brother-in-law, Daniel Kluthe; and sister-in-law Margie Niewohner. Memorials may be directed in Irwin's name to the Alzheimer's Association, Big Sioux Area, 225 North Michigan Avenue, 17th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
