Born to Quakers, Mary Ann (unknown), b: 1811 Pennsylvania and Thomas Slater, b: 1805 Ohio, Phillip was the eldest of eight children listed on the United States Federal Census taken in Ray County, Missouri in 1850. Those children were: 1. Phillip Slater , b: 1830 in Ohio 2. William Slater, b: 1833 in Ohio 3. Maria Slater, b: 1837 in Ohio 4. Susan Slater, b: 1840 in Missouri 5. John Slater, b: 1848 in Missouri In 1853 Phillip married Miss Caroline Harvey, 1834-Ohio. They settled in at Crooked River Township, Ray County, Missouri where he farmed and they began their family. Children known to have been born to Philip and Caroline include: 1. Daniel Boone Slater , b: November 25, 1854 in Missouri; d: June 28, 1924 in Texas 2. George "Dibby" Slater , b: 1857 in Missouri 3. Slater , b: November 4, 1860 in Missouri; d: October 15, 1930 in Texas The 1860 Federal Census taken in Crooked River Township, Ray County, Missouri is devoid of Phillip's name. We find Caroline, 25 years old with Daniel 5 years old, George 3 years old and Mary 1 year old. The 1870 Federal Census taken in Ray County, Missouri shows 13 year old George living with an aunt and her family; and 11 year old Mary living with an uncle and his family. Daniel, then 15 years old, is not shown with these children. It is known that he went to the coal mines to work before this time, but records have not yet been found that will fix dates and locale.
