Newton was the son of Joel & Catherine Stephenson Maudlin. On 23 Dec 1875 he married Prudence alice Grey. They were the parents of Elmira Mae(Shaffstall), Flora Belle (Elliott), Cornelia (Barnhart), and Edward.
