Raymond R. Smetak, age 68 of Axtell. passed away Sunday evening, November 16, 1997 in a Temple hospital. Rosary was recited at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in West with Mass of Christian Burial following at 2:15 p.m. with the Rev. Isidore Rozycki as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Smetak was born August 9, 1929 in Los Angeles, California and was raised in California and Cottonwood, and had also lived in the Leroy-Gerald, Axtell area for 10 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elk. Mr. Smetak was a veteran serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 121 of Waco, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 6 of Cottonwood. Mr. Smetak was a refrigeration technician having worked for Turnipseede Refrigeration in Waco for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond L. Smetak who died August 26, 1994. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Fay Smetak of Axtell; two sons, Mike Smetak of Axtell and Leonard Smetak of Brownwood; two brothers, Vincent Smetak of Somas, California and Fred Smetak of Fort Worth; one sister, Anna Marsh of West; and four grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Steven Marsh, Paul Smetak, Ernest Smetak, Ronnie Lucien, Barry Eyers and Dennis Debbendener. Kotch Funeral Home of West was in charge of arrangements.
