WEST - Funeral services for Ferdinand Smetak, 87, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West. Msgr. I. J. Valenta will officiate with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at Aderhold-Moore Chapel in West. Mr. Smetak died Thursday in a Dallas hospital. Mr. Smetak lived in West many years. He had been a member of the KJT Lodge for 63 years. Surviving are seven sons, William F. Smetak, of Takin, Ill., Bernard F. Smetak of Downey, Calif., Frank J. Smetak of Fort Stockton, Alphonse A. Smetak, Lewis A. Smetak and Fred J. Smetak of Dallas, and Florian Smetak of West; three daughters, Mrs. Millie McCaig of Dallas, Mrs. Hardwick of Sun Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Georgia Flaherty of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Smetak and Mrs. Anna Steinocher of West; 37 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. Waco News Tribune, Waco, Texas - May 10, 1958. -------------------- Ferdinand Smetak Funeral Services Held Here Monday Ferdinand Smetak, age 87, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Dallas. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Assumption in West. Msgr. I.J. Valenta officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Rosary was recited Sunday at 8 p.m. at Aderhold-Moore Chapel. Mr. Smetak migrated to the United States from Moravia, Czechoslovakia at the age of 21 years, and settled in Praha, Texas, where he began his lifework of farming. Two years later, he married Marie Theresa Petru, a girl from his native country. In 1905, the Smetaks and their 6 children moved to West. Four more children were born to them after moving to this community. Mr. Smetak continued farming and prospered. The Smetak family are members of the Church of Assumption. He was a member of the St. Joseph Lodge. On October 24, 1943 the Smetaks celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. In 1945, Mrs. Smetak became ill and they moved to California to reside with their children. Mrs. Smetak died on April 1, 1949 and was buried in West. Mr. Smetak then moved to Dallas where he resided for seven years. He was stricken with partial paralysis in September, 1957 and in February, 1958, suffered another stroke which took away his speech. He was bedridden for the last four weeks of his life. He is survived by seven sons: William F. Smetak of Tukin, Ill., Bernard F. Smetak of Downey, Calif., Frank J. Smetak of Ft. Stockton, Texas, Alfons A. Smetak of Dallas, Lewis A. Smetak of Dallas, Fred J. Smetak of Dallas, Florian Smetak of West; three daughters, Mrs. Millie McCaig of Dallas, Mrs. Hardwick of Sun Valley, Calif., Mrs. Georgia Flaherti of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Smetak and Mrs. Anna Steinocher, both of West; 37 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were James Smetak, Henry Smetak, Joseph Flaherti, Ed McCaig, all of Dallas, Fred Smetak of West and Ben Smetak of Fort Stockton.
