John King, age 79 of Ross, passed away April 26, 1999 in a Waco hospital. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. April 27 in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. April 28 in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, with full Military Honors conducted by West V.F.W. Post #4819. Mr. King was born Dec. 23, 1919 in Ross, to Sam and Lottie Estes King. He attended Ross School and graduated from West High School in 1937. He attended Four-C Business College. He married Mary A. Jaska on May 2, 1943 at McDill Field in Tampa, Florida. He enlisted in the Army Air Force and served from 1939 to 1945 as intelligence clerk, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served 44 months overseas in Puerto Rico, France, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. His unit, th4e 391st "Black Death" A-26 Invader Group, won a Presidential Unit Citation. He was a lifetime member of the West Knights of Columbus Council #2305, VFW Post 4819, and the American Legion. He retired from the postal service in 1976 with 34 years of service. He served as President, secretary and manager of the Ross Water Supply Corporation. He played and coached Ross Fencebuster Baseball for many years and enjoyed trotline fishing. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. King was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Jamie Chudej. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Ross and ten children, Mary Ruth Schroeder and husband Jack of West, Jo Ann Kreder and husband Gary of Ross, Martha Andrle of Waco, Cecilia Kuklies and husband Robert of Lake Jackson, John King, Jr. and wife LaDonna of Whitney, Monica King of Waco, Roberta Gerik and husband Brice of West, Theresa Walker and husband Andy of Lafayette, Louisiana, Edith Kubala and husband Mark of West, Sam King and wife Elaine of Ross; one brother, Carl King of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Ruth Bryant and Eva Baese of Waco, 29 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Active Pallbearers were his grandsons, Steve Dudik, Gary Kreder, Jr., Craig Andrle, Russell Kuklies, John Brian King, Jeremy Veselka, Sammy Gerik, Matthew Walker, Caleb Kubala and Sam King, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were his grandsons. Vince Dudik, Joey Dudik, Eddie Dudik, Kevin Dudik, Terrence Dudik, Jeff Veselka, Aubrey Gerik, Bob Gerik, Colby Kubala, Joseph King, and Joshua King.
