Bio

Mrs. Joe Hanzelka Dies Watching Barn Burn Early Monday Mrs. Joe Hanzelka, 58-year-old Cottonwood housewife, died at 7:15 a.m. Monday while watching a neighbor's barn being destroyed by a lightening-ignited blaze. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Church of the Assumption, West, with Revs. George Doskocil and Werner Bockholt officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary had been recited at the residence Tuesday evening. Mrs. Hanzelka was born Marie Foitek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Foitek, near West on October 25, 1896. She attended St. Mary's School and was married to Joe Hanzelka here in 1914. They had lived on their farm right at Cottonwood since that time. She was a member of the St. Ludmila, Altar and Rosary Societies of Assumption Church. Mrs. Hanzelka had not been ill prior to her sudden death, attributed to a massive stroke. She and her husband had calmly driven their car across the road to the Joe D. Sulak place after sighting their neighbor's barn on fire. Mrs. Hanzelka was standing in the Sulak backyard and talking with her daughter, Christine, Mrs. Sulak, and Raymond Holy, another neighbor who managed to catch Mrs. Hanzelka when she collapsed, just before she died almost immediately. Survivors are her husband, Joe Hanzelka of Route 2; two sons, Raymond Hanzelka and Jimmy Hanzelka of Grand Prairie; five daughters, Mrs. Lillian Traywick of Waco, Mrs. Martha Snapka of Irving, Mrs. Lois Rejcek, Mrs. Dorothy Holacka, Miss Christine Hanzelka, all of West; three brothers, Joe Foitek, Henry Foitek and Frank Foitek of West; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Kocurek of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Millie Kapavik of West, Mrs. Jane Steinocher of West and Mrs. Christine Zastoupil of Dallas; and 15 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Frank Drozd, Frank Steinocher, Frank Kapavik, Jim Holacka, Henry Gallia, and Joe Sulak. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 65, No. 3, Edition 1, Friday, May 27, 1955, page 1.
