Bio

Daughter of Delbert Walker and Cynthia Elizabeth Park Wife of Hyrum Duke Brown married 11 June 1912 in Provo, Utah, Utah I am the daughter of Delbert and Cyntha Park Walker, the second of thirteen children born to them, in Pleasant Grove, Utah. I was born to good Latter-day Saint parents, Apr. 29, 1895. At the age of 8, I was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I attended school at Pleasant Grove. Father was a farmer and a very good one; we all had to work very hard on the farm. At the age of seventeen, I met Hyrum D. Brown at church one night, and shortly after that, we were married. We were married on June 11, 1912, in Provo, Utah. Later on, our marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. In 1913 a baby boy was born to us. He was my father's and mother's first grandson and he was named Leland H. Brown. My husband worked as a farmer while we lived in Provo. Then in 1915, my husband wanted to move to Burley, Idaho to farm. I surely did not want to go as to meant leaving my folks, but I knew what I should do - go where he wanted to go to make a living for us. So for fourteen years, we farmed at Burley, Idaho. It surely was hard work, for we had none of the modern conveniences that we have now. We just had kerosene lamps and had to haul all our water. The first two years we were there we burned sagebrush in our stoves winter and summer. When someone would clear off a piece of ground, we were glad, because we could get some good big pieces of sagebrush. It was surely hard work but we enjoyed every minute of it. They were happy days. In June 1919 another son was born to us and we named him Delbert Roy Brown. Our boys both went to school in Burley, and both my husband and I were active in Church work. We lived in the Springdale Ward; there were not many families in that Ward so everyone did his part. Hyrum worked with the Boy Scouts and was a counselor in the Young Men's Mutual and a ward teacher. I taught Primary for five years. After that, I was put in as President of Primary, which position I held for four years. After farming in Burley, I coaxed my husband to move back to Provo, Utah. So in 1929, we moved to Provo, Utah where we bought a home. We are still living in that same house. Our boys both finished school after we moved to Provo. After moving back we have tried to be a little active in the church. I have now been a visiting teacher for 36 years. Also secretary in the Relief Society, worked on the quilting committee, and refreshment committee for several years. My husband was always so good to help me in any job I accepted. My husband now holds the office of a High Priest and a ward Teacher. In 1941 both of our boys were called into the service of our country: Leland serving 3 1/2 years and Delbert Ray 4 1/2 years. most of it overseas. Both of them came home to us without being wounded for which we thank our Heavenly Father every day. Both boys are now married and have such lovely families. We are the grandparents of seven grandchildren, five girls, and two boys. When we came back to Provo, my husband started to work for Utah Ice and Cold Storage and is still there, has nearly completed thirty years for them. By Florence Walker Brown
