The funeral of Stephen William Vail, retired engineer was held at 9 o'clock this morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church. High requiem mass was sung by Father Boniface, assisted by the choir. There was a large attendance of friends and railroad associates. Mr. Vail was widely known on the D. & R. G. W. system, having been employed by the company from 1879 until he was retired in November last year, because he had reached the age limit of 70 years. Mr. Vail was born in Pennsylvania Nov. 6, 1852. He began his railroad career on the Mineral Point railroad in Wisconsin as brakeman. Three and a half years later he entered the engine service of the same road as fireman. In 1879 he came to Colorado and worked for the South Park but after a few months he went to the D. & R. G. W. shops. A little later he accepted a position as fireman, was promoted to hostler and then left the service for two years. He went to Grand Junction as a fireman in 1883 and was promoted to engineer In 1887. He then removed to Salida and lived here until his retirement. He went to San Francisco in December to live with a daughter. Mr. Vail died July 21 in San Francisco. The body arrived in Salida Wednesday and lay in state at the Elks Home until this morning when it was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Morehouse. Mr. Vail held a splendid record as an engineer. Ho was an ardent member of the It. of L. E. and popular with all the railroad men. When he retired last November he appeared to have many useful years before him. He was a home-loving man. He was chief engineer of the B. of L. E. for two terms. Services at the grave were conducted by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Marshall Pass Div. No. 199 and Scenic Line Div. 147. G. I. . to B. of L. E. The services were In charge of chief engineer E Z. Victor and Chaplain W. H. Thompson. --The Salida Mail (Salida, CO) Tue. 24 Jul 1923 ========================================
