From the St. Paul Phonograph, August 4, 1954, page 8, transcribed by Linda Berney: Funeral Services Held Friday for Mrs. Ella Smith – Mrs. Ella Smith, the widow of Abraham Lincoln Smith died at a nursing home in Kearney late Thursday afternoon. She had been seriously ill for the past four months. She was 86 years old. She was born February 1, 1868 in Missouri to Adrian and Ada Higgins. Her parents moved from Missouri to Custer county when she was a young girl. On March 5, 1889 she was married to Abraham Lincoln Smith and they immediately came to a farm near Cushing to make their home. A son, Clifford L., and a daughter, Bessie were born to them. Mr. Smith died on Dec. 3, 1929 after a long illness. Mrs. Smith’s health began to fail some five years ago, but she was able to be up and around until her last illness. She was a charter member of the Methodist church in Cushing. Two brothers and five sisters preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, C. L. Smith of Cushing and Mrs. Fred McClelland of Mount Ayr, Iowa, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. [….Funeral details…]
