Victor S. Jares, age 94 of West, passed away Saturday evening, July 28, 2001 in a Waco hospital. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Kotch Funeral Home Chapel, by Deacon Cecil Friend. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with the Rev. Vincent Chacko, IMS, as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West, conducted by V.F.W. Post No. 4819 of West. Mr. Jares was born August 3, 1906 in Flatonia, Fayette County. He was the son of Louis Jares, Sr. and Mary Miksanik Jares. He lived in West most of his life. He graduated from West High School and was an Honor Graduate of the 4-C Business College in Waco. Mr. Jares served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Italian Campaign. He served for 50 years as Quartermaster for VFW Post 4819 and VFW District 29 for 40 years. Up until 1988, Mr. Jares never missed a National or State VFW Convention. He belonged to the AD Camp National Organization of the VFW. He won numerous awards for outstanding service, including the Dickerson Award, a national award, as Quartermaster. He was very dedicated to all needs of veterans and their families. Mr. Jares was employed with Zatopek Oil Company in West from 1930 until 1996. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305 of West and VFW Post No. 4819 of West. Mr. Jares was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Louis Jares, Jr. and Fred Jares and two sisters, Helen Marie Jares and Lillian Carson. Survivors include a brother, Ben J. Jares of West Rest Haven and his wife Lena and several nieces and nephews. Active Pallbearers were Russ Willsey, Ernest Uptmore, Jake Tucker, Ernest Zahirniak, Joe Zahirniak and Bill Klaus. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the V.F.W. Post No. 4819 of West. Kotch Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
