Bio

David Duncan, the 23-year-old son of Mrs. Louise Duncan of West, drowned Sunday, June 20, while swimming in the Brazos River about eight miles south of Marlin. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, Father George Doskocil officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Rev. W. A. Buckholt led the rosary in the Duncan home Monday evening. Due to the large crowd, Father Bernard Makovy of Bellmead offered his assistance and led the rosary on the outside. The accident occurred at 9 a.m. Sunday while Duncan was swimming with his uncle, Paul Miller of West, about 20 feet from the bank. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miller and their two small children and Duncan had been on a two-day fishing trip. Duncan, who was a Navy veteran, was a good swimmer. .... Miller swam over to him and grabbed him .... and tried to pull him to shore. Miller lost his grip and Duncan went under. David was born on February 8, 1933. He completed his high school education while serving in the U. S. Navy. He enlisted in the Navy in July, 1950. He served in the Korean War Zone most of the three and a half years he was in the service. He was honorably discharged in December 1953. He completed a business course at 4-C College in Waco in September 1954, at which time he acquired a position in The First National Bank of Waco. Prior to his death he was a teller in the Armored Car Division of "The Friendly First." David was an altar boy while at St. Mary's School, during high school, while in the Navy, and he continued to serve at Mass frequently since his discharge. He was an officer in the Knights of Columbus; a member of the KC Choir, VFW, a very active member of the CYO, and a member of the Father Polcak Memorial Fund Committee. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louise Duncan of West; four sisters, Mrs. Bob Donahew of Elm Mott; Mrs. Douglas Duff, Iva Lou Dunan and La Nelle Duncan, all of West; three nieces, Linda and Cynthia Duff of West, and Denise Donahew of Elm Mott; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. His twin brother, Daniel Duncan, died on August 2, 1946. David was the first member of the CYO and also the first member of the KC Choir to die. His funeral was the first in the new Catholic Church. Among the many out of town friends and relatives who called were Bellmead CYO; Westphalia CYO; Tours CYO, and numerous fellow employees of the First National Bank of Waco.
