Charley E. Goates, age 78 of West, died on Tuesday, May 12, 1998 at West Rest Haven. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday (today) at St. Mary's Cemetery near West, with Rev. Don Elrod officiating. Mr. Goates was born July 4, 1919 in Aquilla, the son of William and Molly Goates. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He married Estelle Detterman on June 13, 1942 in West. She preceded him in death on September 7, 1981. He worked for General Tire for 20 years until he retired in 1976. He was a member of the AFL-CIO Local #312 and the First United Methodist Church in West. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Goates of West; one twin brother, Everette Goates of Waco; one sister, Ruth Usrey of Hillsboro; one grandchild, Russell Slovak and his wife, Lojuana of Grand Prairie; one great-grandson, Corey Slovak of Grand Prairie and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Donald Goates, Richard Goates, John Soots, Ken Maler, Clifford Perkins and J.B. Trafton. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
