Our Sunday Visitor (Omaha, NE), Friday, February 27, 1931; pg. 6 ST. STEPHENS, NEBRASKA Another pioneer St. Stephens resident was called by death Monday when Mrs. Ferdinand Ostdiek passed away about 11 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Buescher, near Lawrence. Theresa Ostdiek, nee Millmier, was born in Germany on September 12, 1848. and died on February 9, 1931, at the age of 82 years. When about 2 years of age she was brought to America with her parents, the family settling at Ft. Madison, Ia. In the fall of 1867 she was married at the Catholic church in St. Paul, Ia., to Ferdinand Ostdiek, who had secured his discharge from the federal army after serving during the Civil war. With her husband she resided at St. Paul and later on a farm on sand prairie near Ft. Madison until their removal to Nuckolls county, Nebraska, in the latter part of the year 1879. Her first home in Nebraska was in one room in the dugout of the Louis Shum home near St. Stephens, where the family lived until Mr. Ostdiek completed the building which they used both as a dwelling and for the first general store in St. Stephens. After Lawrence had succeeded St. Stephens as the trading center for the community, chosen because of the junction of the railroads there, the family moved to the farm two miles east of St. Stephens. The husband passed away in October, 1906, and three of their children preceded the mother to the grave. A daughter, Mrs. Kate Kimminan, died about thirty years ago; a son, Gerhart Ostdiek, passed away in 1909; and another son, Frank Ostdiek, passed away in August, 1929. Surviving are a son, Henry of Geneva; and four daughters, Mrs. Jas. Buescher and Mrs. John Buescher, of Lawrence; Mrs. Clem Witte of Cambridge, and Mrs. Joe Brockman of Mt. Clare. Fifty-seven grandchildren and forty-three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held last Thursday morning, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. Hahn , at St. Stephens, and burial was made in the cemetery at St. Stephens. Six grandsons of the deceased acted as pallbearers. ========================= The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, February 26, 1931; pg. 2 Theresa (sic) Ostdiek, nee Millmeier (sic), was born in Germany on Setember (sic) 12, 1848 (sic), and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jos.
