Samuel Owen Preston was the son of John Sylvester Preston and Nancy Frances Houchin. His maternal grandparents were John Decatur Houchin and Mahulda Lindsey of Edmonson County, Kentucky. At the time of the 1880 Census of Caneyville, Grayson County, Kentucky the John Sylvester Preston family consisted of: John S., a farmer, age 36; his wife Nancy F., a house keeper, age 30; and their children: William R., a laborer, age 14; Valuntine, a laborer, age 12; Woodford M., a laborer, age 10; Samuel O., age 8; John H., age 6; Huldah J., age 4; and Robert, age 2. All were born in Kentucky with their parents born in Kentucky. Samuel Owen Preston was the husband of Dora Alice Willis, the daughter of George Melvin Willis and Rebecca Nash of Edmonson County, Kentucky. She was born on August 15, 1876. They were the parents of Sam Owen Preston, Jr., who was born on May 22, 1913 and died on February 19, 1945. Samuel Owen Preston died in Grayson County at the age of 73 on December 2, 1945. He was buried as Sam O. Preston in the Wilson Cemetery in Ready, Grayson County, Kentucky. His wife Dora A. Preston joined him there after her death on September 11, 1958. His parents and his above brothers are also buried in this cemetery.
