Bio

John Alexander Taylor was the son of Matilda Iredell Justice (1840-1923) and Elijah Zachary 'EZ' Taylor (1834-1875). He married Lucy Amelia 'Mellie' Richardson on November 10, 1883 in Dallas County, Missouri. Children: • Atlantis N. (Taylor) Wilkins (1884-1944) • Della Matilda (Taylor) Swinney (1886-1911) He moved to Oregon, and in 1893, John Taylor left his family in Oregon and moved to Helena, Montana, where he changed his name to John Jefferson Justice . His mother's maiden name was Justice. Lucy and John were later divorced and he continued to support Lucy and the family. He then married Ella Hattie Gies on October 2, 1895 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Hattie was the daughter of Matilda C. and Peter D. Giles. Children: • Hattie Ella Poppino (1897-1986) • Della Matilda Norton (1903-1981) • Carrie Ida Fulkerson (1904-1988) • William Jefferson Justice (1907-1974) The following was written by the daughter, of his second marriage, Hattie Ella (Justice) Poppino: "His parents, who had lived in Oregon County, Missouri, and had gone about 1858 to Texas, he was born on the way back from Texas. They settled in Dallas County, Missouri. He was ambitious and managed to obtain an education at an academy in Louisburg, Missouri, finishing in 1877. He then went to Kiowa County, Kansas, where he homesteaded and lived in a sod house and was a cowboy until 1882, when he returned to Dallas County, and taught school until 1885. In 1883 he married Mellie Richardson and had two daughters, Atlantis Taylor, who married Floyd Wilkins and died 1944 in Seattle, Washington and another daughter, Della, who married Clyde Sweeney (Swinney). They had a son, Marion, of Portland, Oregon. In 1885 John A. Taylor and family went to Bakersfield, California, where he taught school and studied shorthand. In 1888 he went to Portland, Oregon, where he was a stenographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. About 1893, he left his family and went to Helena, Montana, where he changed his name to John Jefferson Justice, his mother's family name. In July, 1893, he obtained a teacher's certificate in Pittman shorthand from the Phonographic Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, and opened a business school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but it evidently was not a success for in 1894 he came to Kansas City, Missouri, and was a stenographer for the New York Life Insurance Company, the Hay Press Company, and Swift and Company. About 1903 he went into the typewriter business, the Typewriter Rental and Repair Company, 119 West 8th. Street, of which he was the sole proprietor although he always called himself "manager". He was very successful and invested in first mortgages on real estate. The family home was at 21 East 31st. Street. About November 1909, he had "inflamatory rheumatism" and the doctors recommended a warm climate, so on January 12, 1910, the family went to Mexico, returning March 24, 1910, a memorable trip in those days. In 1916, he bought 40 acres on the northwest corner of Olathe, Kansas, and built a home there. He sold the business in Kansas City a few years later and retired. The Justice children did not know until about 1917 that their father's real name was Taylor. It came as quite a shock when their half-sister, Atlantis, came from Seattle to visit her father. His first wife had obtained a divorce in Portland, Oregon, but he had kept in touch with his daughters and supported them. He and his second wife, Ella, had never told anyone." ∼ The Kansas City Times, Kansas City, Missouri 14 Jun 1943, Monday, Page 8 JOHN JEFFERSON JUSTICE, 82 years, formerly of Kansas City, died Saturday 12, June, 1943 at his home in Olathe, Kansas.
