Mary Adeline Taylor was the first of eight children born to Elijah Zachary and Matilda Iredell Justice Taylor. Mary Adeline had four sisters and three brothers. Mary Adeline Taylor married Francis Marion Lawson on December 16, 1875. On February 11, 1877, they became the parents of a baby girl they named Nancy Iredell in honor of her grandmothers. Sadly, Francis Marion died March 27 1877 when his daughter was just a month old. Mary Adeline and Nancy were immediately taken in by Mary's mother, Matilda Iredell Taylor. Matilda's husband had died a short time before and Matilda had lost her own father as a small girl. She understood what her daughter and granddaughter were going through. Matilda had a large farm and plenty of space for them. Mary Adeline was familiar with the farm and the work that needed to be done to keep it running. She also was an accomplished basket maker and sold baskets to help support her daughter. Two years later, Mary Adeline married Theodore F. Dugan. He was a Civil War veteran and a farmer. Together they were to have three children. Nine years into their marriage, Mary became severely ill with extreme flu like symptoms. The doctor was called. Mary had spinal meningitis. She died 42 hours later at 4 p.m. on March 2, 1888. Mary Adeline is buried next to her oldest daughter. Her mother and other family members are also buried in this cemetery.
