Bio

[Francis Dolvin McCown, died 27 May 1939] McCOWN--On Monday evening, May 27, as the sun was sinking in the west, Francis Dolvin McCown departed this life, at the age of 76 years, two months and a few days. For several months he had been in poor health, however, he was confined to bed only about two weeks before he passed away. All that could be done by loving hands and skilled physicians was done to lessen his suffering and lengthen his life, but nothing could be done to check the spread of that deadly disease, cancer. Brother McCown was born March 2, 1853 in Arkansas. He was mar[r]ied to Miss Ninnie Jones, fifty-four years ago, who, with their four children, survive him. The family moved to Texas in November 1892 and for thirty-two years Brother McCowan and his wife resided in the community called Cross Roads, seven miles southwest of Paris. Brother McCown was baptized in 1880 by Brother Ezell at Blue Bayou, Howard county, Arkansas. His life has been one of service to the Lord. He was a Bible scholar. The establishing of the church in that community was due mainly to his ef[f]orts. During the entire time that he lived there he was the leader, the teacher. His widow, four children seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of friends are left to feel their loss. The children are J.A. [J.R.] McCown and Mrs. R.O. Stuart of Odessa, and Mrs. B.F. Tugwell and Mrs. W.L. Wilson of Paris. The many beautiful floral offerings and the number who attended the funeral services to pay their last tribute to him, evidenced the love and esteem in which he was held. Brother Robert G. Cook conducted the services on May 28, at the Lamar Avenue church at Paris, after which the body was laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery to await the coming of the Lord. We mourn not as those who have no hope, but pray that we may profit by the example set by his life, and be prepared when our summons comes. ONE WHO LOVED HIM.
