Helen Matus Girard, 84, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, in Waco. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary's Cemetery, with the Rev. Luke Gilliam officiating. A rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel by Janice Kaluza, followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. Helen was born in Abbott, Texas, to the late Will and Albina (Krenek) Matus. She attended the old Briggman School near Penelope. Helen was united in marriage to Leo J. "Lefty" Girard. Helen was a waitress for several restaurants, including Fickels, Goldstein's Café, Jess Radle Steakhouse and The Miller Family Lake Brazos Steakhouse, all in the Waco area. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco. Helen loved spending special time with her family. She also enjoyed dancing, drinking pivo, gambling, playing bingo and watching the Dallas Cowboys. One of her favorite memories as a young child, was of the time it snowed on the 4th of July in West. Preceding her in death was her husband on Sept. 27, 1985; and a brother, Ben Matus. Survivors include sons, Joe "K.L." Miller and wife, Pam, of Arlington, Johnny Girard and wife, Linda, of Eddy, Tommy Girard and wife, Kim, of China Spring, Leo "Sonny" Girard and companion, Cindy, of Lacy Lakeview, and Billy Girard and wife, Glenda, of Lorena; daughters, Mary Ann Moody and husband, Ron, of Waco, Linda Henry and husband, Jack, of Waco, Lillian Crawford and husband, Don, of Irvington, Ala., and Theresa "Terry" Avants, of China Spring; brother, Willie Matus and wife, Willie Mae, of West; sister, Lucille Kveton and husband, George, of Lubbock; sister-in-law, Ida Drozd, of West; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
