Ida was born May 30, 1872 near Paint Creek in Bastrop County, Texas to Heinrich Carl Schmidt and Karoline Korf. She was the 6th of eight children. About 1890 she married her cousin, August Brachwitz (b. abt. 1865), son of Christian Gottlieb Brachwitz, Sr. and Fredericke Johanna Schmidt. August died on April 2, 1890 when he fell from a horse riding to get help for Friedrich Ihlo, the husband of another cousin, Friedericke Goerlitz. He was buried in the Paint Creek Cemetery (about 7.5 miles north of Paige, Texas). Ida was pregnant with their first child, who she named Maria, born January 14, 1891. Ida remarried to August Letz, a farmer with 100 acres, on August 5, 1891. Ida and August had at least 6 children at Paint Creek before moving to Wimberley in Hays County (1900 U. S. Census of Hays County, Texas ED 15-54, House/Household 21; 1902 tax assessment of Hays County, Texas, 151 acres Abs. 217, R. B. Gregory Survey). By 1910 Ida had given birth to 7 more children with another on the way and were living in Old Glory, Stonewall Co., Texas when they were enumerated in the census on April 23 (ED 206, Sht. 5A). By the 1920 census, August and Ida had divorced. She and her family were still living in Old Glory and August was living alone in San Antonio, unemployed.
