Bio

Charlie Letz was rural mail carrier out of Old Glory for 44 years. He started carrying the mail in 1924 and traveled 750,000 miles in those years. He used 35 different Ford cars through the years. Charlie Letz was the first and only rural mail carrier operating out of Old Glory. He delivered mail every day, six days a week with a daily distance of 27 miles. Charlie Letz was raised on a farm north of Old Glory. He married Adeline Dippel in 1920. The couple attended school at Hooker which later consolidated with the Old Glory Rural High School District. His first car was a Model T Touring Car and since then he has purchased three of the Ford Model T's, three Model A's, one Model B and a new V8 almost every year since except during the war years when they were unavailable. His beginning salary was $1,007 per year. The Old Glory Post Office was established in 1908 and the railroad came through town in 1909. The train delivered the mail for a long time before the line was disbanded, then the mail came by truck.
