Atlantic Telegraph – January 24, 1908 Remains of A. S. Eshelman Buried in Noble Center Cemetery Sunday Abraham S. Eshelman, after a lingering illness, died at his home in Rodgers, Arkansas, Wednesday of last week, the eighth inst., and accompanied by two sons, Raymond and Roy, the remains reached the home of L. J. Weaver in Noble Township late Saturday night. Sunday morning the funeral services were held in the Noble Center Evangelical church conducted by Rev. D. H. Smith, pastor of the Evangelical church at Wax, the regular pastor being absent from home. It was an impressive service and attended by a large congregation, most of whom were close friends and former neighbors of the deceased. Interment was in the cemetery near the church. A. S. Eshelman was born in Blair County, Pennsylvania, January 8, 1843 and moved with his parents to Carroll County, Illinois when he was but nine years of age. There he grew to manhood receiving this education in the country schools. On August 11, 1862 he offered himself a sacrifice in defense of his country by enlisting in the Ninety-second Illinois Volunteer infantry, and served with honor until the close of the war, being discharged June 21, 1865. He was with Sherman in all his campaign in North Carolina and his march to the sea. In September 1866 he was married to Mary A. Kingery, also of Carroll County, Illinois and to this union six children were born, for of whom with the devoted wife, survive the departed. In 1871 the deceased moved with his family to Cass County and settled on an unimproved piece of land near the center of Noble Township. There the family resided until Mr. Eshelman was elected county recorder in 1886, when the family moved to Atlantic. For six years Mr. Eshelman served the people of Cass County as their recorder and more painstaking, competent and conscientious official never held a public position. In 1894 the family moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas where Mr. Eshelman engaged in a manufacturing enterprise which he followed for about four years when the entire plant was destroyed by fire causing a heavy financial loss to Mr. Eshelman. Soon after this he was appointed deputy United States marshal and then made warden of the United States jail, which position he held until his health failed him about one year ago, when he resigned and moved with Mrs. Eshelman to Rodgers, Arkansas, in the hope that his health might be restored. A. S. Eshelman's entire life has been a very busy and active one. He was a splendid character, a true citizen, a faithful husband, an indulgent and kind father, and a steadfast neighbor and loyal friend. – Griswold American
