History of Adair County, Iowa: Christian Eshelman – The subject of this sketch was born April 9, 1854, in Carroll county, Illinois. A son of Martin and Elizabeth (Stoner) Eshelman, Christian's father having died in Carroll, he with his mother, removed to Cass county, Iowa, in the spring of 1875. His marriage occurred at this place November 2, 1877, to Miss Anna M. Kingery, an adopted daughter of Daniel and Susan Kingery and four children have been born to them, Cora J., Ida, Stella, and Albert – the three former are living. In the spring of 1878 the family removed to Eureka township, and in 1883 to their present location on section 27, where Mr. Eshelman owns one hundred and sixty acres of good land; and has one hundred and thirty acres under cultivation. He raises grains and stock to a considerable extent. Adams County Free Press: Thursday, June 12, 1947 - Chris Eshelman - Christian Eshelman was born in Carroll county, Illinois April 9, 1854 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mary Coleman, near Prescott, Iowa on May 31, 1947 at the age of 93 years, one month and 22 days. He came to Iowa from Illinois in 1875 and has spent the remainder of his life here. He was united in marriage with Anna M. Tobias Kingery, who preceded him in death April 17, 1930. They moved to Adair county in the spring of 1877, being pioneer settlers of this county. He continued to live in his home in Eureka township until October 8, 1944 when his failing health made it necessary to make other arrangements. He then made his home with his daughter, Mary where he remained until his death. He was the father of ten children, three of whom have preceded him, Albert, an infant son passed away April 14, 1883. Ida Strong of Bridgewater passed away January 15, 1941, Grace Knorr of Creston October 15, 1944. He is survived by Cora Hall of Salem, Oregon; Stella Lewis of Longmont, Colorado; Elizabeth Bond of Fontanelle; Mary Coleman of Prescott; Eva Chandler of Nevinville; Earl Eshelman of Bridgewater; Maude Beasley of Creston; also 44 grandchildren, 101 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. Fifty years or more ago he was converted, claimed Jesus as his Savior, and has been faithful in his belief ever since. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Fontanelle Methodist church. Burial was in the Eureka Center cemetery.
