The stone has a fiddle and bow engraved across the top. The fiddle has a chin rest on the right side of the instrument. This would be a fiddle for a left-handed fiddler. Newton Coleman is buried in the Carter plot and has many loved ones buried near.
Newton Coleman Carter, 76, a retired oilfield tank builder and iron worker, died Wednesday, 15 March 1989. He was a resident of Alice since 1937. Services will be held at 2 pm Friday at Holmgreen Mortuary with burial at Alice Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his father Clay Carter, six brothers and a sister. As a young man of 25 years, he was the informant on his little brother Carl's death certificate. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Carter of Alice, two sisters, Verta Clay Carter of Alice and Allie Faye Trusty of San Antonio, two daughters, Bobbie Locke of Glenrose and Sue Tipps of Mathis; a brother, Clyde Carter of Eustace; four granddaughters and four great-granddaughters. Pallbearers are sons-in-law Lloyd Locke and Jimmy Tipps; Richard Williamson, nephew; and great nephews Andrew Williamson, Shawn Spillar and Keith Spillar.
