Bio

Verta Clay Carter, 89, passed away August 3, 2013, in Orange Grove. She was born January 29, 1924, in Haskell, Texas to Maggie Myrtle and William Clay Carter. She retired from Southwestern Bell after 27 years as a telephone operator and working in the repair department. She was a member of the Orange Grove Church of Christ. A Christian of incredible faith, she was affectionately "Verta Clay" to most and was indeed the rock of the family. Raised in the Church of Christ, she always made it possible for each of her family members to attend services whenever the door was open. Verta, along with "Mama Carter," helped raise many family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers and an infant baby sister. Verta Clay is survived by one sister, Allie Faye Trusty of Alice, and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Church, family and friends were her life.
