Bio
William Milton was born in Anderson County, Tennessee, the son of John and Susan J. Shannon Scarbrough. He and his brother, John, who married Catherine Hanks, came to the Clear Springs area of McMinn County. William married Lavina Hanks, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hanks and they were parents of three children, Susan Jane who married Lafayette Moore; John Henry married Sarah Wallen, and Hugh Lupton married Ellen Dixon. Lavina died in 1842, and William married Deniza Hambright in 1843. They were parents of 9 children: Mary Ann married John A. Turley; Lavina married Nathaniel Price; William Franklin married Harriett Davis; Sarah Hardin married James C. Denton; Thursa Kizzar married James H. Calhoun. They also had three children who died young, Urana, James, and Martha, and an unnamed infant who died at birth. William Milton was a natural mechanic, and was one of he leading master millwrights in Tennessee. He was a charter member of the Clear Springs Cumberland Presbyterian church where he served as a Ruling Elder, and delegate to the presbytery on two occasions. He was a member of the Hiwassee Lodge F.&A.M. for almost 30 years. (Bio added by Marian Bailey Presswood from research by Carolyn Scarbrough Choate.)
