Orivle O. Strickland, 87, passed from this life Sunday, March 18, 2007. Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Chapel, with a reception 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Greenwood reception center. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Pallbearers: His grandchildren, Skipper Strickland, Jeff Strickland, Marty Strickland, Dana Sims, Todd Allen, Allison Jobe, Shellie Hlavaty and Sandie Rod. Orivle was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Princeton to Omar and Carlie Strickland. He lived his early life in Munday and later moved to Fort Worth. He married his childhood sweetheart, Hallie Clarke, in 1939, and they were members at Castleberry Church of Christ. He had a special talent in the sports field, starting as a star athlete in high school. Orivle was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and in Japan. He was awarded two purple hearts during his service. After coming back from the service, he played major city fastpitch softball as a left-handed pitcher and power hitter. He played on a team that beat "The King and his Court" twice. The four-man team was only beaten eight times in its pro career. He went on to coach his two sons from Little League on up to high school. He coached teams that went to state and won a state championship in 1952. He coached some of the great talents who went through the Fort Worth area high schools. Orivle retired from General Dynamics after 34 years. In the years following, he enjoyed fishing, dominoes and watching sports. His favorite past time was being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; two sisters; and many beloved pets. Survivors: Wife of 67 years, Hallie; children, Lynn Strickland and wife, Saundra, of Willow Park, Gerry Tittle and husband, Randy, of Cleburne and Ronnie Strickland and wife, Stacie, of Conroe; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Rachel Robertson and husband, John, of Graham.
