The Cuba Tribune, Dec, 20, 1934 ROSALIE SHIMEK In the memory of Roselie Houdek, who was born in Bohemia, Europe, April 15, 1853. She came to America with her parents and located in the state of Iowa, where they made their home until the year of 1872 when they moved to Kansas and established their new home near Munden. At the age of 21, she was united in marriage to Fred Shimek, who preceded her in death in the year of 1898; to this union six children were born: two daughters and one son also having preceded her in death. Her long pilgrimage was ended when she departed this life at her home in Munden, December 11, 1934, at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 3 days. All those [who] knew her are recalling now what a devoted and loving mother she was. Her children shall never forget the self-sacrificing love of their mother. She leaves to mourn her loss a daughter, Mrs. Rose Palacek of Munden, Kansas, and two sons, Charles of Narka, and Edward of Concordia, Kans. She [is] also survived by five brothers and four sisters, the remaining members of a family of 18 children, namely Wesley and Jerome Houdek of Munden, Kansas; Richard of Haddam, Kansas; Charles of Compton California; and John Houdek; Mrs. Libbie Swercinsky of Belleville; Anna Jehlik of Belleville; Catherine Moravek of Munden; and Josie Ruzicka of Cuba, Kansas. Also five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church in Munden with Rev. Kmecik officiating in both the Bohemian and English languages. Source: Cuba Tribune (Cuba, Kansas), Dec. 20, 1934. Page 1.
