The Belleville Telescope, November 30, 1900 Little Jerry Shimek, the 12-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shimek who reside about five miles northwest of Cuba, met with an accident Thursday evening of this week that resulted in the loss of his life. Wishing to go to a near neighbor on some errand the boy mounted a pony and started off, he had not gone far, however, until the pony began to buck, throwing him out of the saddle but instead of alighting on the ground his foot caught in the stirrup and he was dragged a distance of a half mile at the full speed of the horse. One leg and one arm was broken besides being bruised all over the head and body, his hip and arm bones protruded through the flesh. Death resulted within an hour and he never regained conscience. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community. -- Cuba Record.
