First Lieutenant, 360th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group, World War II. Pilot of B-17F Flying Fortress #42-29931, nicknamed "Devil's Workshop" (also "Satan's Workshop"). Returning from mission to Bernburg, Germany, with № 2 engine knocked out by flak, attempted to return to base in England on three engines. Last sighted midway across the English Channel, ditched February 22, 1944. No survivors. All ten crewmembers drowned. Three bodies were recovered and originally buried in Brookwood Cemetery, England. George's remains were repatriated to Texas in 1948.
