Bio

Services for Mrs. Johnnie E. Underwood, 99, of Carthage were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Burnaman officiating. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Mrs. Underwood was born Nov. 25, 1895, in McClendon and died Thursday, May 4, 1995, at a Carthage nursing home. She married Robert Franklin Underwood on Nov. 25, 1912, in Waxahachie and he preceded her in death in 1967. She and her husband owned and operated Underwood Cotton Gin, Feed and Seed and was the fertilizer dealer for several years. Mrs. Underwood was the oldest member of First Baptist Church in Carthage. She was also preceded in death by a son, George Edward Underwood, in 1944. Survivors include five daughters; son, J.R. Underwood of Carthage; sister, Mrs. R.C. Myrick of Houston; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Her grandsons served as pallbearers and great-grandsons as honorary pallbearers. ***Grandmother of Contributors Spouse*****
